Twenty-five years later, we honor the Queens residents, first responders, workers, and volunteers who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, or died from 9/11-related illnesses. Each lived in or shared a deep connection with Queens, and many are remembered through local memorial sites and co-named streets featured here on the Queens Name Explorer. On this page, we remember those lost from the following neighborhoods: Ridgewood, Woodhaven, Ozone Park, Jamaica, Oakland Gardens-Hollis Hills. Rockaway (Far Rockaway, Edgemere, Arverne, Rockaway Park).

Raymond York (1956-2001) was born in Queens. He worked for twenty years on Engine 285 in Ozone Park. After a minor injury, he was reassigned to the Fire Zone where he taught fire safety classes to kids. On September 11, 2001, York heard about the attack and got a ride with a passing television crew. Despite being off duty, he went to help out at the scene and lost his life assisting others. York was survived by his wife and four children, one of whom said he was "He was good at everything. He was the best person in the world."
