Guru Tegh Bahadur Marg Ji (1621-1675) was the ninth of ten gurus who founded the Sikh religion. He was the youngest son of the sixth guru, Guru Hargobind, and the father of the tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh. He was a leader of the Sikhs, a religious scholar, a prolific poet, and devoted defender of religious freedom and human rights. He sacrificed his life on November 11, 1675 defending the religious freedom of the Kashmiri Hindu Pandits from the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, who was forcing them to convert to Islam. He was ultimately executed and became martyred on November 24, 1675. His sacrifice was honored with the nickname "Hind Di Chadar" or The Shield of India. The Richmond Hill community has a large Sikh population and is often called "Little Punjab." The Baba Makhan Shah Lubana Sikh Center serves as a vital religious and community center. Located at 113-10 101st Avenue in South Richmond Hill, Queens, the center sits at the corner of 114th Street and 101st Avenue, an intersection co-named Guru Tegh Bahadur Marg Ji Way.
