Firefighter Michael J. Elferis (1973–2001) died during rescue operations following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. A resident of College Point, Queens, and a graduate of Flushing High School, Elferis attended John Jay College before beginning his career in public service. He served as an NYPD officer at Manhattan’s 10th Precinct for two years before joining the FDNY. He had been with Engine Co. 22 on the Upper East Side for five years at the time of his death. Only 27 years old, Elferis was a devoted sports enthusiast and a lifelong Yankees fan.
